Tier list Part 1 (2023)

Tiny Rogues is a cute pixel-art top-down action roguelike with bullet-hell elements. He sees it as simple and straightforward, not trying to be unique, but doing the basics very well for a cheap small game. Level-ups give impactful abilities, and many characters and weapons keep runs varied. He calls it a good game that surprised him with its fun and content, and places it in high B tier.

Liked

  • Level-up abilities are impactful, so each run feels distinct
  • Many characters, abilities and weapons give lots of customization
  • Really fun music
  • Lots of bosses, and boss fights are the highlight
  • Surprising amount of content for a small, cheap game
  • Successfully delivers an old-school approach in a new game

Disliked

  • Minimalistic gameplay means runs feel similar over a long time (e.g. 50 hours) despite the customization
  • No level variety
  • Enemy designs get pretty repetitive
  • Nothing especially unique about it

Tier list Part 2 (2024)

Tiny Rogues is a simple top-down dungeon crawler roguelike that he previously rated in an earlier tier list. A huge content update transformed it, adding a large amount of weapons, builds, characters, secrets, bosses and a full meta-progression layer. He loves the expanded game but notes it is now less approachable because items and keywords carry much more text and stats. He still recommends it, including to newcomers to the genre, and moves it up from B to A, placing it above Atomic Crops.

Liked

  • Enormous amount of content added in a single update
  • Huge variety of weapons, builds, characters, secrets and bosses
  • Meta progression added that makes it feel like a new experience
  • Core mechanics remain simple and easy to pick up
  • Still very approachable and recommended for people new to roguelikes
  • Items and classes are very different from one another

Disliked

  • Items became complicated with many new keywords and lots of text
  • More stats to track than before, which raises the learning curve
  • Understanding the different builds takes more time
  • No longer as approachable as the original simple version, and can be intimidating at first

What players say

A solo-developed (RubyDev) pixel-art action rogue-lite with bullet-hell combat, RPG-style stats and an enormous pool of weapons, equipment and traits, played in roughly 30-minute runs down 20+ floors.

Players love it: Steam shows Overwhelmingly Positive (about 96 percent of roughly 10,800 reviews), and many reviewers call it one of their favourite roguelites, praising build depth and value at $9.99. Metacritic has a page but no critic or user reviews, and no OpenCritic entry was found, so critic coverage is essentially absent and reception is almost entirely community-driven. The game is still in Early Access after launching in September 2022. The last big content update was around late 2023, which produced a steady stream of 'is it abandoned?' complaints, though the developer posts monthly devblogs through 2026 and is doing a near-total rewrite (new hub, dual wielding, consumable rework, mid-run saving, localization promised). The most repeated practical complaints are no mid-run save, late-floor screen clarity, and occasional freezes.

Players love

  • Extreme build variety: hundreds of weapons, 500+ equipment items and 100+ traits combine into 'fireworks' synergies, and many reviewers say learning them is the core joy
  • Snappy, smooth combat and dodging with a strong 'one more run' loop; a run takes about 30 minutes, which busy players like
  • Price-to-content ratio: repeatedly described as underpriced ('price of a fast food meal') for the amount of content
  • Large roster of unlockable classes (34 per the store page) that change playstyle, with unlocks that keep coming without watering down the game
  • Responsive, passionate solo developer with human, transparent devblogs; several reviewers cite this as a reason to recommend
  • Easy to learn controls with deep, complex systems underneath; compared favourably to Binding of Isaac, Hades, Enter the Gungeon and Nuclear Throne
  • Optional difficulty scaling (Cinder system) and optional progression, so the game stays fun without forced grinding
  • Pixel-art charm, a catchy soundtrack and memorable boss personalities that reviewers say give the game heart despite simple graphics

Common complaints

  • No mid-run save or pause-and-resume: runs can last 1-1.5 hours and players with jobs or kids find this a dealbreaker; it is the single most repeated complaint
  • Long stagnation in Early Access: reviewers say no meaningful content update since late 2023, leading to 'abandoned' and 'dead game' talk (a 44-comment Steam thread) despite ongoing devblogs
  • Screen clarity on later floors: bullet-hell density and effects make it hard to see what is happening, leading to 'spray and pray' play
  • Stability: several reviewers report hard freezes mid-boss or at floor transitions 30+ minutes into a run, plus a controller-detection bug with Wooting keyboards
  • Weak onboarding: most content is unlocked by default with little explanation, and the Alignment mechanic required to progress past floors 10-11 is not explained
  • Some classes feel too similar (ranged DPS with small gimmicks), undercutting the headline class count
  • No official Chinese (or other) localization despite being requested for years; promised for the rewrite
  • Some boss fights are very short (seconds) or, conversely, specific bosses like the Jousting Champion are called un-fun

Can feel tedious

  • Early floors (first ten) are too easy for experienced players, so they go on autopilot for about 40 minutes before real difficulty starts
  • Floor 10 onward is a sharp difficulty spike with bullet-heavy chaos that some players cannot get past, blocking character unlocks
  • Long, unskippable animations (for example the loot sequence after floor bosses)
  • Trait and loot selection RNG and the need to reroll around starter items; choices tend to repeat across runs
  • Grind to unlock later characters feels samey for some, and playstyles run out of steam
  • Keyword and effect overload makes builds feel hard to parse

What's unique

  • Generates a new 'character' each run by combining class, weapons, armor, traits and consumables, closer to an RPG loadout than a fixed character
  • Bullet-hell dodging mixed with stat-driven, dungeon-crawler build-crafting; tagged as a blend of Isaac-style item synergy with Nuclear Throne-like speed
  • Extremely fast rooms and bosses when the build works: several reviewers say encounters are a 'test' of whether you understood the systems
  • Sheer content scale for a solo dev: 40+ bosses, 400+ weapons, 20+ themed floors, random events and NPCs
  • Planned rewrite introduces a Rogue Hideout hub for informed floor selection, dual wielding instead of weapon swap, and PoE-style crafting orbs and scrolls

Players want

  • Add a mid-run save/suspend function (promised in the 2026 rewrite announcement)
  • Ship the long-delayed big update with real new content and endgame progression, and give a clearer release timeline
  • Improve visual clarity on late floors (readability of projectiles and effects)
  • Add endgame or post-unlock progression: one reviewer was stuck after unlocking the first 16 characters, and there are requests for an endless mode
  • Better tutorialisation of mechanics such as Alignment, keywords and trait interactions
  • Make classes and early-unlock characters more mechanically distinct; fix freezes and input bugs; add localization
